Full Spectrum

What Does Full Spectrum Mean?

Full spectrum light covers the entire electromagnetic spectrum. This means the light produces everything from infra-red to near ultraviolet.

Is Full Spectrum Light Good for Plants?

The sun produces full spectrum light, so it follows that when a grow light can provide a spectrum that mimics that of the sun, it gives plants access to the same wavelengths they require to fulfill their natural biological processes. The intensity of colors within the sun’s light spectrum varies with the seasons, and plants respond accordingly. It’s for this reason that growers who use HID grow lights have to switch from MH bulbs (which generally favor blue light) during vegetation to HPS lights (red) for flowering.

Full-spectrum LED lights contain the entire spectrum within a single fixture, so growers can more closely mimic the behaviors of the sun for their plants. Some full-spectrum LEDs have pre-set levels for each color that reflect the amount plants are known to actually use for photosynthesis and development. (For example, plants use a limited amount of green, so most LED manufacturers engineer their lights accordingly.) Variable spectrum LED grow lights give the grower more flexibility and control, as the light spectrum can be manipulated and programmed for various stages of growth.
